[0:00] I do thank you for the invitation to come up and be warm here with you. The fellowship is certainly that and it's been lovely to see old faces looking older. [0:17] And to those people I'm about to give a nostalgia trip to. As they say to me at morning tea, you're just the same as you always were. [0:28] Which is a lie because my face is considerably older. And as the hair recedes, it's getting bigger, my face. Now I'm sorry to tell you of... [0:43] John Stott said never start with an apology. I'm about to. He said you don't start with an apology because if it's true, you shouldn't have done the wrong thing. [0:53] And if it's not true, you shouldn't have fib. Well, I'm telling you an apology. I've prepared on the NIV and you've got the ESV. I'm sorry. [1:06] I actually prefer the ESV and have promoted it for years and I don't know what beheld me. But being an itinerant now, I keep going to churches that have got different translations. [1:17] And I've got to keep asking, which translation are you using? And I didn't ask until yesterday which translation, by which time I've got all this NIV material. And even the headings are NIV words. [1:30] So I'm sorry about that. But you're of age. You'll sort it out. And if there's a problem, you'll just raise it and say to me, but Philip, it doesn't say that. [1:40] And I'm glad that that's the case because the ESV is better than the NIV, I think, frankly. But, you know, there's just part of the problems of being. [1:53] Are you still using the ASV, brother, the American Standard Version? I moved the ASV at your recommendation. And, ah, thank you. Yes. [2:05] Have you got any more salt you'd like to rub into that wound? Okay. So I want to start off on this whole subject with Christian spirituality. [2:20] One of the characteristic comments of celebrities, whoever they are, is that they are not religious but very spiritual. They don't judge other people. [2:33] They're not preaching or promoting their beliefs. They're not part of any church or religious organisation. But they are spiritual. However, they usually cannot say what that spirituality is. [2:48] Some will say, well, I follow a Buddhist. Some will follow some kind of Westernised Hinduism. But generally it's a vague kind of awareness of there's being more to the world than just the physical world. [3:01] Some pursuit of inner peace or wellness or something. That is, they're trying to say, I'm not an atheist. But they don't know what they are. [3:11] It's a reaction against the kind of banal, boring, hard, soulless atheism, which reached its peak, actually, in the 1960s scientific materialism. [3:25] The Christian reaction to that materialism, that materialistic kind of worldview, was Pentecostalism and the neo-charismatic movement. More of that later on. [3:36] But both celebrity spirituality and charismatic spirituality fail to do justice to the Holy Spirit of God. [3:48] They fail to do justice to true spirituality. And so over this weekend we're looking at true spirituality that comes with the Holy Spirit of God. [4:00] And we're looking particularly at why Jesus sent the Holy Spirit. So with pen and paper, because you've got the outline here on page five of your book, and if you've got pen, just briefly, for your own sake, write a quick one sentence as to what you expect the Spirit to do for you. [4:23] What is it that the Spirit does for us or will do for you? And it's just for your sake, so that later in the weekend you can say, well, I was wrong there, wasn't I? [4:42] Okay, you don't need a PhD thesis, just a sentence. And no one needs to see it except your spouse. [4:55] Now, the Spirit we're talking about is Jesus' Spirit. I told you the wrong page number, didn't I? [5:06] We're on page three, that's better. It's Jesus' Spirit. In the New Testament, it's Jesus who poured out God's Spirit, such that the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit being spoken of, is actually said to be the Spirit of Jesus. [5:24] Here, for example, are some that Nick's going to put up for us on the screen. You see Philippians 1.19. These are all NIV, you'll see. For I know that through your prayers and God's provision of the Spirit of Jesus, what has happened to me will turn out to my deliverance. [5:40] Or Acts 16, verse 7, when they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to. [5:51] Or Galatians 4, because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts. The Spirit who calls out Abba, Father. The Spirit is the Spirit of Jesus. [6:04] So the place to start in discussing the Holy Spirit is not with current controversies, or ancient ones for that matter, but with Jesus and his teaching about the Holy Spirit, especially why he was sending his Spirit. [6:21] So I'd have you turn in your Bibles to John's Gospel. During the talk, Jess is going to be reading for us, so when you hear the Bible being read, it will come into the air, and you will discover that God was a woman after all, because the voice of God is going to come. [6:41] No, that's not right. No, but it's Jess. It's not God, right? Although it is God's words that she'll be reading. But turn in your Bible to John's Gospel. And the structure of John's Gospel is fairly simple to see. [6:56] There's a little prologue of chapters 1, verses 1 to 18, where we read then, in chapters 1 to 12, of the public ministry of Jesus. [7:08] Then when his fame reaches outside Israel to the Greeks, who come to ask him a question in chapter 12, Jesus replied, the hour has now come for the Son of Man to be glorified. [7:22] Up until then, he keeps on saying, no, no, not now, not now. This is not my hour. This is not my time. But then suddenly, now is the hour. And so, from there on, in chapter 12, you see verses 31 to following. [7:39] We read, I wonder if you could read that, Jess. It wasn't on your list, wasn't it? Chapter 12, verses 31 to 33. Just make it hard for you. [7:50] Chapter 12, verses 31 to 33. Okay. Chapter 12, 31. Now is the judgment of this world. [8:01] Now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself. [8:13] He said this to show by what kind of death he was going to die. And so now, the death of Jesus is in view. Suddenly, everything changes. [8:24] Chapters 1 to 12, public ministry of Jesus. Chapters 13 to 17, is his private ministry to his disciples. And then, from there comes, his betrayal and his death. [8:40] And his resurrection. That is, in chapter 13, it was just before the Passover festival, and Jesus knew his hour had come for him to leave the world, and go to his father, and so he gathers for the last supper. [8:57] You see, John's gospel has 21 chapters. Five of them, are given over to this one conversation. [9:10] That's extraordinary imbalance in the writing, isn't it? So chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, is his conversation with his disciples, and the night he was betrayed. [9:22] It's got to be very important, that John is giving, you know, a quarter of his book, to one conversation. It's a long conversation, but it's one conversation. It's the important one. [9:34] And then, 18 to 21, his arrest, his trial, his death, his resurrection, and appearances. That is, the gospel's not a biography. A modern biography will tell you about his mum, and tell you about his dad, what school he went to, what sport he played, how he grew up, when he had his measles, and all kinds of other things. [9:52] As we psychologise people, we write, and we read Freudian, kind of, biographies, these days. But the, the gospels are not biographies. [10:03] They're gospels. They're telling us, about Jesus. You know, half the, half the gospel, is about three years. And then, the other half, is about one night, or one weekend. [10:17] And even in the one weekend, five chapters, into this one night's conversation. And in it, there are five little paragraphs, about the Holy Spirit. [10:31] So, on the night he was betrayed, was the one time, he taught about the Holy Spirit. And he taught about it, in the light of the fact, that he was just about, to be crucified. [10:41] And so, in each of these, he speaks about, another advocate. And we're going to go through, each one of them. Advocate is the word, that is used in the NIV translation, and I think it's helper, in the ESV. [10:56] But you'll hear, as we go through. So, the first one is found, in chapter 14, verses 15 to 17. Thank you, Jess. Jen, it's okay. Jen. That's fine. [11:07] Jess, I'm going to be a terrible bass. Jen. If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another helper, to be with you forever. [11:25] Even the Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him, nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you. [11:47] Give me verse 18 too, please. I didn't ask for it earlier. I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you. See, Jesus has been telling them, about his impending departure. [12:01] For he's going to be taken from them. He's going to be taken from them, in his death. And this is fairly terrifying, when you ponder it. I mean, he's putting their minds at rest, by telling them, what's going to happen. [12:17] Look back to, chapter 13, chapter 13, verse 33, verse 33, you see, little children, little while, I am with you, and you'll seek me. [12:31] And just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, you cannot, where I'm going, you cannot come. We'll go down to verse 36. [12:43] I'm a Peter said, Lord, where are you going? Jesus answered him, where I'm going, you cannot follow me now, but you will follow me afterwards. And Peter said to him, Lord, why can't I follow you now? [12:57] I'll lay my life down for you. And Jesus, of course, the famous bit, said, when you lay down your life for me, truly, truly, I will say to you, the rooster will not crow, till you have denied me three times. [13:11] But then he continues, and of course, our chapter divisions, disturb us here, because we think, oh, that's the end of that. But no, no, he continues, let not your hearts be troubled. Believe God, believe also in me. [13:27] You see, chapter 14, brings us to this reassurance of them. Jesus is putting their minds at rest, telling them, what's going to happen? [13:38] I'm going. And they're saying, but don't worry about it. I'm looking after you, while I'm going. He won't leave them alone, like orphans. Put yourself, we don't know, but put yourself, as much as your imagination allows, and remember, it's only your imagination, into their situation. [13:58] You know, I was fishing one day, and I met this man, heard this great preacher. He said to me, leave your dates, leave your father, come follow me. And for then, for three years, I've wandered all over the countryside, following him, going out and doing work for him, seeing incredible things happen, listen to his teaching, and I've been persuaded, that he is the Christ, and we know, that he's, I mean, he's a strange man though, because he does keep talking about dying, and being rejected. [14:27] But anyway, he's come to Jerusalem, the crowds are out there, welcoming him, Hosanna in the highest, I mean, this is, this is the time, we're going to come, and now he's saying to me, I'm going to leave you alone. [14:39] And you're, well, I've just spent the last three years, and he's going to desert me now. What? What? And so Jesus says, take heart, don't worry, I'm going to look after you. [14:52] And how I'm going to look after you, is I'm going to ask the father, to send another comforter. That's the first thing. That's the passage, you see, in 15 to 17, number one is, he'll ask the father, send another comforter. [15:09] Now we don't know how to translate this word, comforter. Every translation is different. Some translate it as paraclete, which is not a translation at all. That's just the Greek word, put into English letters. [15:21] It's accurate, it's just we don't know what it means. Which is not accurate then, is it? Some put it as a comforter, which was a good word, in the 16th century, but hopeless today, because a comforter in the 16th century, was someone who pushed you on. [15:38] A comforter in the 21st century, is a dummy that you put in the mouth of a baby. A comforter is a kind of, cotton wool, kind of, that's not, there's a wonderful thing in the Bayer tapestry, where the soldiers are comforted, by, I think it's the bishop, standing behind them, shoving his spear, into their backsides, to get them going. [16:02] And the Bayer tapestry, which is, you know, the Battle of Hastings, 1066, says, you know, the bishop is comforting his troops. You know, and that's about as far away as, the modern sense of the word. [16:15] Well, the prayer book, the, the, the King James Version, was using comforter in that sense, which is not a bad translation, but, doesn't work for modern English. [16:28] Helper, is a good word, someone who helps, assists, it's just, a little vague, as to what that means. You know, how does he help? In what way is he helping? [16:40] The word paraclete, the Greek word, has a certain legal characteristic to it, and that's why advocate, is not a bad word, if you understand what an advocate is, a solicitor, a barrister, they advocate on your behalf, they argue for you, they, they, they represent you, and so God, he says, Jesus says, I'll ask the Father to send you another, advocate, another comforter, another helper, another, notice, is an important part of it, because up until this stage, Jesus has been their advocate, Jesus has been their, their comforter, but, he is about to be taken from them, but he says, no, no, I'm sending you a replacement, important to understand here, friends, the Holy Spirit comes as a replacement, for Jesus' work, of being an advocate, of being a comforter for them, thirdly, because it is a legal term, it's somebody who's going to speak up for you, see, when you get into trouble, I hope you don't, get a good barrister, get a good solicitor, get someone who's going to come, and argue for you, now, there's any number of lawyer jokes, we could tell at this stage, but beware, [17:53] Christians, about lawyer jokes, because God's the judge, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, are both called advocates, so, there we go, I knew we had one in the crowd somewhere, yes, you'd always trust the lawyers, to be around, anyway, the Holy Spirit, you see, is, he's our lawyer, he's the one who's, who will go to court for us, who will speak on our behalf, who will advise us, on how to behave, in the situation, and so far, Jesus has been protecting them, Jesus has been speaking for them, but when he leaves, he's going to send a replacement, a replacement, he's going to ask the Father, to send him a replacement, for the one who's going to be, is the spirit of Jesus, but now, he will not only live with them, but this, this new one, is going to be better, because this new one, is going to be inside you, he's going to be in you, as well, and who is this advocate, well, you'll notice, he's called, the spirit of truth, the world can't accept him, remember a few verses earlier, verse 6 of chapter 14, you should know, [19:07] I am the way, the truth, and the life, and now, he will ask the Father, to send his spirit, the spirit of truth, to be with them, in his absence, that's the first thing, that we learn about the Holy Spirit, from the Jesus teaching, that's the first promise, but let's turn to the second one, in chapter 14, verses 25 to 26, where we learn, that he is to be the teacher, thanks Jen, thanks Jen, these things, I have spoken to you, while I am still with you, but the helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father, will send in my name, he will teach you, all things, and bring to your remembrance, all that I have said to you, okay, notice several things, about this promise, firstly, the Holy Spirit, is sent by the Father, in Jesus name, he doesn't come independently, with Jesus, it's because of Jesus, it was Jesus name, this is not something, separate from Jesus, secondly, notice the Spirit's task, or role, will be to teach, he comes as a teacher, [20:21] I wonder if you wrote that down, in your expectation, that when the Spirit comes to you, it will be, it will come as a teacher, but he comes to teach, and what he will teach, thirdly, is Jesus message, all these three years now, Jesus has been teaching, but that teaching, is not going to be lost, it's not going to be lost, by the apostles, who didn't understand properly, it's not going to be lost, by the apostles, whose memory fails them, the Holy Spirit, will remind them, what Jesus has said to them, you see, it's how we know, what Jesus taught, for the Spirit, reminded the disciples, who wrote the New Testament, what Jesus said to them, he sent the Spirit, to make sure, his message, would faithfully, be recorded, and taught, in the future, see, when you ponder it, you shouldn't be surprised, that the role of the Spirit, of truth, would be to be, a teacher, what else do you do, with the truth, but to teach, but the teaching, is not some kind of, new additional information, different information, than I've given you, as if Jesus teaching, was wrong, or a needed correction, by someone, or as if Jesus teaching, was inadequate, than he ever told you, what it was about, no, no, the disciples, will need something, more, they'll need to be reminded, for they're about, to see their Lord, arrested, and brutally murdered, and if their master, is so persecuted, well, they not only need, a teacher, they'll need, something more, so, [21:59] Jesus says, in chapter 15, verses 18, following, you see, if the world hates you, know that it's hated me, before it hated you, if you're of the world, the world would love you, as its own, but, because you are not, of the world, but I chose you, out of the world, therefore the world hates you, remember the word, that I said to you, a servant is not greater, than his master, if they persecuted me, they will persecute you, if they kept my word, they will keep yours also, see, they will need, more than just a teacher, they'll need a teacher, to be reminded, what Jesus said, but they'll need, an advocate, someone, who will stand up for them, in the difficult times, they'll need, they'll need the spirit of truth, to teach them, but they'll also need, and we come to the third promise then, the spirit, to testify for them, and so, I'm at point five, on the outline, and I'm at, chapter 15, verses 26 to 27, thanks Jen, 15, 26, 15, verses 26 and 27, yeah, but, when the helper comes, whom I will send to you, from the father, the spirit of truth, who proceeds, from the father, he will bear witness, about me, and you also, will bear witness, because you have been, with me, from the beginning, okay, notice in this promise, one, instead of, asking the father, as in promise number one, or instead of the father, sending the spirit, in his name, as in promise number two, this time, [23:48] Jesus, is sending the spirit, himself, he's sending the spirit, from the father, you might like to think about it, who is it, that controls, the spirit of God, who is it, that can send, the spirit of God, second thing, to notice is, the spirit's testimony, is not about himself, but about Jesus, he comes to testify, to witness, about Jesus, that's what he's been, a witness about me, says Jesus, you see it there, and thirdly, he will witness, he will testify, as the apostles, will also testify, about Jesus, that is, their task, is to witness to Jesus, his task, is to witness to Jesus, he comes, with them, to do this work, of witnessing to Jesus, now, this word witness, testifies, an important word, to remember, for what is it, that witnesses do, it's more than, being an eyewitness, a witness, does more than, see something, a witness, to be a witness, actually has to, say something, [25:01] I saw something, but I'm not going, to tell you about it, well I'm not a witness, and witnessing, is actually speaking, but it's more than that, it's speaking, in the face, of opposition, you see, you never call, a witness, when everybody agrees, that's a waste of time, you call, a witness, when people disagree, and you call, upon them, to testify, against the opinion, of others, witnessing, is always, a conflict activity, I mean, that's why we have, witness protection, programs, etc, because sometimes, it's so dangerous, to witness, to testify, because the person, will indeed, kill you, if you actually, tell the truth, against them, that's why we, whistleblowers, need protection, because they're, witnessing to things, that other people, do not want them, to say, and so, in the context, of suffering, chapter 15, the little section, [26:01] I just read to you, or look at chapter 16, I've said these things, to you, to keep you, from falling away, they'll put you, out of the synagogues, indeed the hours, coming when whoever, kills you, will think he's offering, to service to God, in the context, of persecution, the Holy Spirit, comes as, the witness, to help you, in your witness, he comes as, the testifier, you see, and so, here is a great promise, of people, who need reassurance, for, they're about to see, their Lord, their leader, assassinated, that is pretty scary, that is a moment, to run and flee, that is a moment, but he says, no no, the Holy Spirit's coming, he's coming to protect you, he's coming, it's like in Mark's gospel, where Jesus says, whenever you are arrested, and brought to trial, do not worry beforehand, about what to say, just say whatever, is given to you, at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit, when you're caught, before caught, when you're dragged, into court, you have a barrister already, you have a solicitor already, in the area of persecution, the Holy Spirit, will give you the words, to be speaking here, saying to these people, so the work of the Spirit, testifying to Jesus, leads us to the fourth promise, in chapter 16, where Jesus said, the Spirit's task, will be to prove, is to convict, is the word, that we're going to get here, in the ESV, so Jen, the world is going, to be shown, to be wrong, in verses, 7 to 11, of chapter 16, thanks, yep, 16, 7 to 11, nevertheless, [27:59] I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage, that I go away, for if I do not go away, the helper, will not come to you, but if I go, I will send him to you, and when he comes, he will convict the world, concerning sin, and righteousness, and judgment, concerning sin, because they do not believe in me, concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer, concerning judgment, because the ruler, of this world, is judged, okay, what are the points, we draw from this little passage, see these are really, incredible passages, and you, I'm sorry, if you can feel, I'm rushing through, with a series of points, but, this is this, this is such an important, you're going to understand, the Holy Spirit, this is what Jesus said, about the Holy Spirit, this is what he taught, this sets up for us, the expectation, of the Holy Spirit, no one's ever talked, about the Holy Spirit before, he's mentioned a lot, in the Old Testament, but he's never explained, what he's come to do, is never, this is the moment, when they are being told, what's about to happen, and here in the fifth one, you see, that we have, is an extraordinary thing, firstly, this time Jesus says, [29:30] I will send the Spirit to you, slowly we've moved, from Jesus asking the Father, to now Jesus, I will send him to you, secondly notice, it must have been hard, to believe for them, that they would be better off, with the Spirit, than they would, with having Jesus with them, hey, come away for a weekend, to this marvellous place, this is a lovely place, thank you for inviting me here, I really, it's a great space, isn't it, and wouldn't it be lovely, if we had Jesus here, that, I mean, this would be a weekend, wouldn't it, if Jesus came, it would be fantastic, actually, I tell you something better, the Holy Spirit has come, and that's better, than if Jesus would be here, see how hard it is to believe, it's easier to believe, this would be the best place to be, because Jesus was here, but actually, [30:34] Jesus says, you'll be better off, if you have the Holy Spirit, an extraordinary concept, I, again, it's only imagination, but I reckon the disciples, hearing this, would say, no, no, no, you hang, stay, you know, this is really, an extraordinary thing, that is being promised, how could it be better off, well, this is because the Spirit, is going to, convict, prove wrong, the world, concerning three things, which actually, are really one, again, this little word, convict, is a bit hard to know, what it means, because conviction can happen, in different ways, proving can happen, it's, he's going to give an expose, we have in New South Wales, I don't know if you have it up here, a thing called ICAC, do you have ICAC up here, or something, federal governments, what it's called up here, what's the alternative, [31:36] A double C, yeah, ICAC is a really funny, non-court court, in New South Wales, it's needed down there, because, it's, attempts to expose, corruption, and there is so much, in New South Wales, we have a permanent court, just to do it, right, and, it's very busy, right, it's a strange court, because you called in, to give witness, to testify, but you're not actually, sent to jail, for anything, it doesn't, there's no innocent, but, if you don't testify, the truth, you'll be caught out, for perjury, and therefore, you'll be put into jail, for that, but then they ask you, you know, did you do, X, Y, Z, did you, lie on your forms, well as soon as you say, yes I did, then the police come around, and they take you, to a real court, where you get, found to be guilty, and put in prison, and so it's our way, of catching our politicians, and our police, and our, and so our, our last, second last premier, in fact we've caught out, about three premiers, over the time, but Gladys Beryl-Jekin, who was there, see her boyfriend, was dragged, before ICAC, he told all kinds, of stories, such as that he'd, spoken to Gladys, about certain, dodgy deals, and so then Gladys, gets called, in front of ICAC, and, she resigns, from, it's an expose, it's to bring out, into the open, it's to expose, that's the word, that's here, it's a little hard, we haven't got, an English word, that you can just, slot in at this point, you see, and so, it's to convict, in our modern, court system, you get convicted, when you're found guilty, and sent to prison, it's less than that, it's to expose, it's to prove, it's to show, the, and what's it going to show, three things, right, it's going to expose, the world about, sin, righteousness, and judgment, sin, righteousness, but they're actually, all about Jesus, sin, because the people, don't believe in Jesus, that's the ultimate, expression of sin, face to face, with God, they killed him, sorry, face to face, to God, we killed him, right, [34:00] I mean, that's, that's the essence, of sin, isn't it, to totally reject God, secondly, righteousness, righteousness, because Jesus, is going to be vindicated, by his resurrection, and so the world, is going to find out, they were wrong, because Jesus, doesn't stay dead, he rises, and thirdly, that then opens up, the whole subject, of judgment, because in the death, and resurrection, of Jesus, the judgment of the world, has started, because the prince of evil, has been overcome, so these three things, that the Holy Spirit, comes to show the world, is the gospel, is the death, and resurrection, of Jesus, is the coming, of the kingdom, it's the one thing, it's Jesus, that is, this passage, helps us, the spirit, is the evangelist, the spirit, is the world evangelist, that's what he comes, to be, the evangelist, and I say, this is terrific relief, because you thought, you were the evangelist, but no, you're not the evangelist, the Holy Spirit's, the evangelist, that's what he comes, to do, he comes, to show the world, the truth, that is in Jesus, it's wonderful, and you're better off, without me, because with, as long as I'm here, the world is not, going to have this, shown to them, the only way, the world is going, to have this shown, to them, is by me, dying, and rising, and going to the father, so, to bring the world, under the sound of God, requires me leaving, for the Holy Spirit, to come, and do it, and so, the fifth one is, he's going to guide you, he's going to guide the apostles, into all the truth, of the gospel, that they may, make it known, accurately, to the world, so Jen, chapter 16, verses 12 to 15, 16, 12 to 15, yes, thank you, yeah, [36:06] I still have, many things, to say to you, but you cannot, bear them now, when the spirit, of truth comes, he will guide you, into all, all the truth, for he will not, speak, on his own authority, but, whatever he hears, he will speak, and he will declare to you, the things that are to come, he will glorify me, for he will take, what is mine, and declare it to you, all that the father has, is mine, therefore, I said that he will take, what is mine, and declare it to you, the spirit comes then, to guide them, but to guide them where, into all the truth, that's where, surprise, surprise, the spirit of truth, guides you into the truth, where did you think, he was going to guide you, he's going to guide you, into the truth, but it's not his own message, no, no, his message is, [37:12] Jesus message, he's going to take, the Jesus message, and guide you, into the Jesus message, he doesn't come, to glorify himself, he comes to glorify Jesus, the Holy Spirit, is our guide, but the promise, has nothing to do, with guiding us, into whether I should be, an engineer, or a plumber, it's got nothing to do, with whether I should, marry Mary Lou, or Drusilla, it's, there's no promise here, about guiding you, in knowing whether, to buy a Toyota, or a Mitsubishi, right, the Holy Spirit, comes to guide you, into the very truth, of the gospel, he's going to come, to guide them, into an understanding, of what Jesus, is all about, because remember, the disciples, didn't know, they were as thick, as all outdoors, the disciples, that's why you love them, because you can identify, with them, right, Peter only ever, opens his mouth, to change feet, you know, oh yes, yes, I'll die with you, within 24 hours, [38:14] I never knew the man, right, they really were, thick and stupid, just like the rest of us, who could have imagined, that God was going to bring, the kingdom of God, to earth, by his, assassination, all kinds of men, have jumped, of bringing, the kingdom, you know, Hitler, Putin, Stalin, Mao Zedong, none of them, have designed it, by crucifixion, well, by other people's, crucifixion, but not by their own, crucifixion, that is not what, the whole idea, was, so strange, so weird, only God, would have thought of it, that's an extraordinary, concept you see, and so, they couldn't imagine, they didn't understand, but don't worry, when, when I'm gone, the Holy Spirit's, going to explain it all to you, he's not going to tell you, something new, he doesn't have to, because I've been explaining it, for the last three years, he's just going to remind you, what I said, and that will explain it to you, so he's not going to, come with his own teaching, he's coming with my teaching, to guide you into all, that the spirit, has received from me, and from the father, the promise of guidance, is really important, but it's a guidance, into the truth, to hear then, is the basis, of Christian spirituality, the most concentrated, part of the Bible's teaching, about the work, of the Holy Spirit, [39:43] I've just taken you through, at rocket speed, here is where it is, this is what it's about, the Holy Spirit, comes, to be the alternative, for Jesus, to be with them, the Holy Spirit comes, to teach them, what Jesus taught them, the Holy Spirit comes, to witness, to testify, in a world, that hates the teaching, of Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes, to show the world, the truth, that is in Jesus, and the error, that's in them, and the Holy Spirit comes, to guide them, into all the truth, which they couldn't understand, until after Jesus died, and rose, they didn't have hindsight, but even with hindsight, they wouldn't have understood, if they hadn't been reminded, what Jesus had been saying, all along, that's the work, of the Holy Spirit, you see why, I want to call it, the Spirit of Jesus, not only because, it is the Spirit of Jesus, not only because, he is called, the Spirit of Jesus, but because, what he comes to do, is so Jesus sent it, that's why Jesus sent him, to come and do, [40:52] Jesus work, that is Christian, spirituality, you notice how cerebral, it is, I've said nothing, about how you'll feel, nothing about how, you'll be moved, nothing about your, experiencing of his presence, really, it's all about, truth, and being taught the truth, and standing for the truth, and showing the truth, truth to the world, and being guided, into the truth, it's, so many times, people speak of spirituality, as being, not cerebral, and accuse Christians, of being, too cerebral, you can't be, too cerebral, that's not a possibility, right, you can be, not cerebral enough, that is a usual, state of humans, but you can't be, too spiritual, I know what they mean, by saying, they say you're, too cerebral, they're saying, you don't, you don't have any, emotions in your life, well, we have emotions, in our life, we're about to sing, aren't we, is that what's, happening next, and so, you know, this is, this is emotion, and isn't it good, but the beauty, of Christian singing, is we don't sing, la la la, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah, we actually sing words, that have meaning, and that we attach, our mind, to our emotion, come up, get ready, get ready, you actually attach, [42:25] I'm just filling in now, for you to, we actually attach, our minds, to our emotions, and express, the truth, in our words, gee, I hope the words, of this next song, are good, it better be, this is a good one, isn't that right, because that's what we're doing, but here is the first, understanding, the big, opening up, of the subject, of the Holy Spirit, and why Jesus sent him, we'll find about, the day of Pentecost, after morning tea,
